Zoomies Carob Bites
Allergy-Friendly, Dog Safe
If you’ve ever wished you could share a chocolatey treat with your dog, this no‑bake recipe is the perfect solution. These puppy‑safe “Reese’s‑style” cups use carob, a naturally sweet, earthy pod that looks like cocoa but contains no theobromine, making it a safe alternative for dogs. Carob has a warm, nutty flavor—not bitter like chocolate, not sugary like candy—which makes it a surprisingly satisfying stand‑in for both humans and pups.
The inspiration for this recipe came straight from our own kitchen chaos. Luna, our Shiba Inu, is allergic to peanut butter and chicken, which knocks out half the dog‑treat aisle. Oakley, our Rottie mix, once locked eyes with a Snickers bar like it was her soulmate, and we knew we needed to create something she could enjoy without worry. Enter this simple blend of three wholesome, human‑grade ingredients that melt together into a creamy, rich, no‑bake treat you and your dog can share.
What You'll Need
Tools
- Microwave or small pot either works; just keep the heat gentle so nothing scorches
- Whisk helps the carob blend smoothly into the warm oils
- Silicone Candy Molds any shape works; shallow molds freeze faster but the thinner treats break more easily coming out of the mold
- Freezer the magic step that sets everything into a firm, snackable treat
Ingredients
- Half cup of Coconut Oil creates that melt-in-your-mouth texture dogs love
- Half cup of sunflower seed butter a safe, nut-free alternative for pups with peanut allergies
- 2 to 5 tablespoons of Carob Powder adjust based on how rich you want the flavor
Groomer's Note: Carob has a naturally earthy, slightly sweet flavor. Start with 2 tablespoons for a mild taste, or go up to 5 for a deeper, chocolate-adjacent richness.
How to Make Them
- Melt: Warm the coconut oil and sunflower seed butter together in a small pot or microwave‑safe bowl. Heat just until melted - you want them warm and pourable, not hot.
- Whisk: Add the carob powder and whisk until the mixture is silky, smooth, and evenly dark. It should look like glossy, melted chocolate.
- Mold: Pour the mixture into your silicone molds. Tap the molds lightly on the counter to release any air bubbles.
- Set: Freeze until completely solid. Depending on mold size, this usually takes 20 to 40 minutes. Pop them out and store in the freezer for long-lasting freshness.
