Weekly Round Up
The Pack Report: New Faces & Weekly Vibes
New Pack Members:
We are so excited to have some new members of the Zoomies family! Welcome Poppy the Lab and Incas the Toy Poodle!
Weekly Highlights:
Poppy has a reputation, according to her parents, for being nervous meeting new people. That’s
exactly why the Meet & Greet is so important when bringing a new member into the Pack. Unfortunately,
she also has a dislike for men. Despite the snow falling steadily over Montgomery County, I headed into
Potomac to meet her and see if she would fit with the pack. When the front door opened, there was no
sign of a nervous dog – instead, I was greeted enthusiastically by a bundle of excited energy disguised
as a Lab! Poppy and I were fast friends and I spent the drive home looking forward to Poppy’s first walk
later in the week. Wednesday rolled around and I was not disappointed – the first walk went just as
well as the Meet & Greet!
Incas lives with his mom in her assisted living home, bringing light to her life every day,
but she can’t provide him the exercise he needs daily. He has a regular dog walker, but everyone needs a
break sometimes! Zoomies is honored to be selected as his permanent back-up sitter, taking on his twice
daily walks when his regular walker isn’t available!
Business Updates:
We are so grateful for the trust you put in us to care for your pups.
We’re testing out some healthy,
allergy-safe homemade dog treat recipes at home this week! We’ll share our favorite recipes, so keep an
eye out for those. When they are perfect for the Zoomies Pack, we’ll reach out to our Pack’s parents to
see if we can share these special treats with your dogs!
Sniffs & News: This Week's Top Stories
Big Shout Out to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue!
Earlier this week, over 75 firefighters responded to a townhouse fire on Oak Shade Road in Gaithersburg. Despite the blaze pouring heavily from the middle-of-the-row home’s windows when they arrived, we are happy to report that several dogs were successfully rescued from the home and are being cared for by Animal Services. No human or animal injuries were reported!
Dogs vs Cats vs Toddlers
A brand new study was published February 26th in Animal Behaviour. It reports that untrained dogs are more likely to help their owners find a hidden object than cats are. Researchers noted that dogs’ behavior in “helping” scenarios is actually more similar to 18-month-old human toddlers than other pets. For Montgomery County dog lovers, that probably doesn’t come as much of a shock!
Breathing Room
A new study from PLOS One has expanded the list of breeds to watch for respiratory issues. Beyond the usual breeds, researchers suggest owners of Japanese Chins, Pekingese, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should be extra vigilant about breathing health during our upcoming warmer spring months.
Groomer's Tip: The Seasonal Shift
It’s that time of year, folks! For those seasonal shedders, coats are starting to blow. Make sure you spend a little extra time brushing your pup as the weather begins to hint at spring in that predictably unpredictable Maryland fashion!
